New Flag for Northern Ireland (2)

New Flag for Northern Ireland
Another, more outside-the-box design for a new flag for Northern Ireland drifted into my head. The design symbolises the Giant's Causeway, an area of hexagonal basalt columns on the coast of Northern Ireland. It's a unique natural wonder. I added six flax flowers to symbolise the six historical counties that make up Northern Ireland (see below). The blue on the right stands for the seas that surround Northern Ireland.
I think this design is rather tranquil and balanced. It's neutral, and yet not without symbolism.
The design would translate well into blason too, for a possible coat of arms for Northern Ireland. The blue of the flower on the red of the 'basalt' is not heraldically correct, however. I might have to tinker with that.

  2. I think this is a really original and interesting design. I posted two slightly altered versions on the New Flag for N.I. Facebook page: the first includes a green fringe, to represent the Catholic tradition, to compliment the red. It also sets out the jagged edges that represent N.I.'s history, and also puts the Causeway in its place: between the sea and the green land of Northern Ireland.

The second takes away the internal hexagons, as I thought it perhaps looked a little 'busy'. It very much changes the effect. I'd love to know what you think.
