Vlag voor de Universiteit Utrecht

Mijn ontwerp voor een vlag van de Universiteit Utrecht is weer gebaseerd op het embleem van de universiteit: wapen van de stad Utrecht op een stralende zon. Die zon is de zon van de Gerechtigheid, zoals blijkt uit het motto van de universiteit: Sol Iustitiae Illustra Nos, moge de zon der gerechtigheid ons verlichten.
Ik kreeg het idee voor deze vlag tijdens een buluitreiking in de aula, waar de vlaggen van Europa, Nederland, de provincie en de stad Utrecht naast elkaar hangen. Ik wilde deze vlag de provincievlag laten weerspiegelen, vandaar dat ik het wapen van Utrecht in het ‘kanton’ van de vlag heb geplaatst.

My design of a flag for the University of Utrecht is again based on the emblem of the university, a badge-like device consisting of the escutcheon of the city of Utrecht placed on a sun in splendour. The sun is the Sun of Justice, referring to the motto of the university: Sol Iustitiae Illustra Nos, may the sun of Justice enlighten us.
This design wandered into my head while I was attending a graduation ceremony in the university Hall, where the flags of Europe, the Netherlands, and the province and city of Utrecht are hanging next to each other. I wanted this flag to mirror the provincial flag; therefore I put the arms of the city of Utrecht in the canton.

Vlag voor Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

Volgende uni: Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, waar ik mijn master heb gedaan. Weer gebaseerd op het wapen van de universiteit. Dat is eigenlijk het wapen van de provincie Groningen, met een boek erop. Daarop staat het (afgekorte) motto van de universiteit: Het Woord des Heeren is een lamp voor onze voeten (of zoiets). Ik heb de kleuren van Stad en Ommeland genomen en daarop het kenmerkende element, het boek, geplaatst. De vlakverdeling heb ik gejat van de vlag van de Rotterdamse studentenroeivereniging Skadi. Zoals gebruikelijk bij Nederlandse vlaggen is het ontwerp niet gecentreerd, maar ligt het zwaartepunt bij de mastkant: zo kun je goed zien wat er op de vlag staat als ’ie wappert.

Next up: University of Groningen, where I got my master degree. Again I based the flag on the arms of the university. These consist of the arms of the province of Groningen, charged with a book. This book contains the (abbreviated) university motto: The word of the Lord is a light for our feet. I took the colours of the provincial arms and put the defining element, the book, on them. The devision of the field is inspired by the flag of the Rotterdam student rowing club Skadi. In Dutch flags the design is usually centered towards the mast-side, so that can you can clearly see what’s on the flag when it’s fluttering.

Vlag voor Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen

 Nederlandse universiteiten hebben geen officiële vlaggen, afgezien van logovlaggen. De universitaire wereld gebruikt wel soms een collectieve ‘universiteitsvlag’, met veelkleurige strepen die de verschillende faculteiten symboliseren. 

Die vlag lijkt nogal op de de homovlag. Maar hij is nogal vaag: toen ik student was hoorde ik er nooit iemand over, en niemand liep er mee rond als symbool van het studentenleven. 

Het idee van een collectieve vlag past mooi in de egalitaire Nederlandse academische traditie. Aan de andere kant hebben een aantal universiteiten wél een mooi wapen: een mooie basis voor een vlagontwerp. Een goede vlag is een simpele vlag, maar als student wil je natuurlijk een beetje ‘drama’.

Om te beginnen een vlag voor mijn oude universiteit Nijmegen. Gebaseerd op het wapen van de universiteit: het witte kruis op een rood veld van de Nederlandse kerkprovincie (eigenlijk het wapen van het aartsbisdom Utrecht) met in het ‘schildhoofd’ een witte duif als symbool van de Heilige Geest.  

Dutch university flags (1): Nijmegen

Universities in the Netherlands do not have flags of their own, apart from logo-flags. They do use a striped flag as a collective ‘university flag’, with the stripes representing different faculties. It’s uncannily reminiscent of the gay pride flag. 

However, this flag seems not to be very well known. Certainly when I was a student, I never saw it used as a symbol of student life, or as an expression of adherence to a particular university. This is quite fitting to the egalitarian tradition of Dutch academic life, with all universities being of the same quality. But, on the other hand, some Dutch universities have quite nice coats of arms. 

I decided to design some flags based on these arms. Now, a good flags is a simple flag, but I think that in order for a flag to appeal to the student community you just need a little bit of ‘drama’.
 
To start of a small series, a flag for my old university of Radboud University Nijmegen. It reflects the unis coat of arms. It shows the white cross on a red field of the Dutch Catholic Church (kerkprovincie; basically the arms of the archbishopric of Utrecht) with ‘in chief’ a white dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. Yes, Nijmegen is (or was) a catholic university.
